FasTracks plans could fall short in north metro area, study finds. Denver.US

Communities in north metro Denver are in danger of getting no train service from RTD's FasTracks program unless the transit agency drastically changes its approach to the project, according to a new report.

Under the FasTracks plan, lines to the north metro region would be among the last to be built, so those communities "carry all the accumulated risk and a reasonable probability of not seeing return from their tax contributions," according to the study.

AT A GLANCE: Private toll roads .Texas.US

LBJ FREEWAY: It's a free road now, but Spanish road firm Cintra will begin rebuilding it as a mix of free lanes and tolled lanes beginning mid-2011 or sooner. The $2.1 billion project will take five years, but once completed, drivers will have a choice: Sit in traffic on the free lanes or pay tolls that could reach $1 a mile to take the tolled lanes.

Private roads still need public money.Virginia.US

Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell's transportation plan includes speculative components that may - or may not - build highways in Virginia. But the Republican does promise to emphasize one existing program that has worked well for the state in the past.

The Public-Private Transportation Act has been instrumental in the construction of highways in Northern Virginia, Richmond and the Southwest. Projects now under way include the addition of high-occupancy toll lanes to the Capital Beltway and a new transit line to Dulles International Airport.

Would you pay a toll to beat traffic in the Valley?Arizona.US

Solo drivers on Interstate 10 could soon zip past traffic by paying a toll to use the carpool lane if a prediction by former U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters proves right.

She says high-occupancy toll, or HOT, lanes on I-10 could soon be available for frustrated drivers. In two months, the cash-strapped Arizona Department of Transportation begins courting private investors to improve the highway system.

Paying for Arizona’s Crumbling Transportation System.Arizona.US

Imagine driving Arizona highways that alert motorists of a traffic jam before it forms, or over bridges that report when they're cracking, or on people-moving innovations that make you proud of your state government. Countries around the globe and even state and municipal entities in America are using those innovations. Arizona is not.

The future of public transportation takes off. California.US

Last year, California residents voted in favor of Proposition 1A, which provides funding for a high-speed rail train from San Diego to San Francisco and Sacramento. Today, government officials such as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger are collaborating with California citizens to provide the state with the most efficient and sustainable method of transportation.

Gov. Bev Perdue announced Monday an innovative public-private partnership — the first of its kind in North Carolina history — designed to accelerate completion of the conflict-ridden Interstate 485 outer loop in Charlotte.

The new funding strategy, unveiled at a press conference by Perdue and N.C. Transportation Secretary Gene Conti, combines public and private resources to build a new interchange and connect the only unfinished portion of the highway between NC 115 and I-85. The estimated price tag is $340 million.

Work on the metro area's nearly $500 million Airport Parkway project has been put on hold - at least temporarily - because of the economy.

Construction on the 12-mile roadway that would link I-55 in downtown Jackson to Mississippi 475/Airport Road in Rankin County near Jackson-Evers International Airport had been slated for a 2010 start.
