John Mothersole, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council and Project Sponsor for the Highway Maintenance PFI Project, explains how the £674.1m of PFI credits awarded to Sheffield by the Department for Transport in April 2009 will help improve the city's highway infrastructure and street scene for generations to come. Sheffield is England's third largest metropolitan district and England's greenest city, with 61% of Sheffield set adjacent to and partly within the Peak District National Park. More than 530,000 residents live within the city boundaries and Sheffield has an economy worth over £8bn a year and employs over 245,000 people.
