A 42 km ‘Namma Metro’ will criss-cross the City on a Phase-1, East-West and North-South corridor in September 2012 at a cost exceeding Rs 8,158 crore. A high-speed train at a cost of Rs 5,767 crore will become a reality in 2011-12 to connect the BRV parade grounds to the Bengaluru International Airport on NH-7 on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. The practice of "build, operate and transfer," otherwise known as "BOT," is a widely accepted procedure to allow private enterprises to carry out all or part of state-planned public works that permits private investment building and long-term operation of transportation or other infrastructure projects before an eventual transfer to public ownership. Seen in the 1990s as an ideal means to promote domestic and foreign private investment in costly transportation projects, almost all BOT projects carried out in Taiwan have experienced grave fiscal and management projects. The Mumbai Metro's second line from Charkop to Mankhurd via Bandra has come closer to reality with Anil Ambani's Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (RIL) putting in the sole bid for the 32-km railway line. The RIL submission came on Friday afternoon at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) office in Bandra (E) after a subtle war of nerves with the rival, Mukesh Ambani Group's representatives who waited till the end but did not submit their sealed tender envelope.
