The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport November 26 commissioned the HCMC Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company to broaden a stretch of the Hanoi Highway between Saigon Bridge and the Tan Van Crossroad to more than 100 meters. HCMC will broaden a 15.7-kilometer stretch of the Hanoi Highway to ease the terrible congestion on it (Photo: Tuoi Tre) The work on the 15.7-kilometer stretch, to be done under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract, will cost VND2.29 trillion (US$127 million) and take 36 months to complete. State officials and environmentalists are nearing a deal to build a 5-mile bridge to link the northern Outer Banks with the mainland. The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported Monday that the $650 million toll bridge would stretch over the Currituck Sound to Corolla, known for its lighthouse and wild horses. The Government of Canada today announced it had bought 38 hectares (94 acres) of land needed for the new toll bridge on the Detroit River that is to be built under a toll concession administered by the governments of the US, Canada, Michigan and Ontario. The bridge so far known by the bland name Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) has obtained most of the needed environmental clearances and should go out to concession in 2010 for completion 2014. Located about 3km (2 miles) downriver from the privately owned Ambassador Bridge it will provide improved connections between I-75 in Michigan and Highway 401 in Canada. Join discussion...

Detroit's battle of the bridges took a new turn today with the US Government withdrawing support for the permitting of a new Ambassador bridge between Detroit and Windsor. The US Coast Guard which only in February released a favorable Final Environmental Assessment and a Finding of No Significant Impact for the second span today reversed itself completely today, charging that the private bridge owner lacks title to property needed to build the new span and is in breech of a slew of contractual and regulatory requirements.
