The future hospital of the McGill University Health Centre will definitely be built as a public-private partnership, executive director Arthur Porter insisted Tuesday evening. The provincial government has been seriously considering taking over the MUHC project from the private sector. Bridgepoint Health and Infrastructure Ontario announced today that Plenary Health Bridgepoint (Plenary) is the preferred proponent selected to design, build, finance and maintain the new Bridgepoint Hospital in Toronto, which will replace the existing facility. Expressly designed to serve people in need of rehabilitation services and living with complex chronic disease and disability, the new hospital will be 10 storeys high, with larger rooms, state-of-the-art space for therapies, a capacity for 472 beds and be approximately 600,000 square feet in size. Additionally, the historic Don Jail will be incorporated into the new site. The interior will be refurbished, preserving its historical significance, into the administrative and education centre for the hospital. It will be open to the public, on a prescribed basis.
