Saudi Arabia is seeking foreign investment for a series of projects to modernise and expand the country's ageing rail infrastructure, Italy's financial daily Il Sole 24 reported on Tuesday. Saudi Arabia's first major rail project in 50 years, The Landbridge project, will soon invite tenders for 1,600 kilometres of new rail lines.
The project aims to transform Saudi Arabia's existing rail network into a world-class freight and passenger rail link across the country.

MEED reported that Beirut based Dar al Handasah will complete the preliminary design work for Jordan Railway’s proposed 960 kilometers long rail network by the end of 2009.
Mr Nayef Rawashdeh director of the railways department at Jordan’s Transport Ministry said that “It is 90% complete.”
Dar is determining the route and calculating the potential revenues the estimated JOD 4.5 billion railways will generate. The network will run the length of the country from the southern Red Sea port of Aqaba to the Syrian border with 2 spur lines running to Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia plans to award a build-operate-transfer contract to expand an airport in the city of Madinah at a cost of 9 billion riyals ($2.4 billion), a report said.
The new airport terminal is expected to be completed within a maximum of four years, Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper quoted Abdullah Rahimi, who heads the country's civil aviation authority GACA, as saying.

is to put up for bids the project of the new Prince Muhammad Bin Abdul Aziz International Airport in Madina through the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) system. The project involves the construction of terminals and the development of runways.

ASCIANO has been chosen as preferred bidder for a $7 billion project in Saudi Arabia, as part of a consortium member of the so-called Tarabot group.
Asciano shares rose as much as 5 per cent in morning trading after the company said it had been chosen in the consortium, involving seven Saudi Arabian partners, as preferred bidder to build the Saudi Landbridge project.

The Tarabot Consortium, led by Arabian Company for Power & Water Development (Acwa Power), is set to be named preferred bidder for the $2.5bn Saudi Landbridge rail project.
The consortium will edge out three other bidders, assuming its submission complies with the technical requirements of the bid to link the kingdom's Gulf and Red Sea coasts, via Riyadh.
