If Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has his way, Los Angeles County will soon embark on a commuter rail building boom the likes of which the region has never seen.
The mayor today will unveil an ambitious but politically risky transportation plan that fast-tracks several high-profile rail projects to be completed within the next decade. That's a big speed-up, because officials have generally been talking about completing them within 30 years.

On Thursday the bipartisan leadership of the US House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee introduced its $500 billion blueprint for federal transportation programs over the next six years. In addition to creating new rail and transit subsidies, the proposal introduces new roadblocks for state looking to convert existing free roads into toll roads.

The government is set to give its final approval for the construction of the country's largest transportation project.
The National Economic and Development Authority board, chaired by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, is set to meet next week and may take up the approval of the Metro Rail Transit 7 (MRT 7) even before the proponent, the consortium Universal LRT Corp. submits the document for the definite funding of the project.
